For patients who have a missing tooth or teeth, dental bridges may be the solution. A dental bridge anchors to two crowns, which are affixed to the teeth on either side of the gap. These anchoring teeth are known as abutment teeth, and they hold in place the false tooth that fills in the gap. The false tooth that makes up the “bridge” is called a pontic. Pontics are available in a variety of materials, including gold, metal, and porcelain, or a combination of these materials. With proper care, a dental bridge can last ten years or more.
